DiscipleShift

DiscpleShift

By: Jim Putman & Bobby Harrington with Robert E. Coleman

  • Intentional discipleship is a must in our churches. Most church growth strategies (books, conferences, etc.) have no discipleship involved.
  • You must determine what a disciple should look like so you have a goal to aim at.
  • Spiritual parents are not perfect, they are simply people striving to grow in their spiritual life.
  • A spiritual parent usually knows where a person is on their journey in life, where they should be, and how to get them there.
  • One just needs to be one step ahead of someone else in order to disciple them.
  • What does spiritual maturity look like? It is what we imagine the Lord would do if he was here upon the earth.
  • Our goal is to present others mature before Christ (Colossians 1:28).
  • Everyone is saved for a purpose.
  • A disciple should grow in four areas of life according to Ephesians:
      1. His relationship with God.
      2. His relationship with God‘s family, the church.
      3. His relationships at home.
      4. His relationship with the world.
  • As a disciple maker you should express your goal of making that person more mature and like Jesus.
  • As a disciple maker you must look at the man in the mirror (you).
  • We must be careful that we are not merely informing people, rather equipping them.
  • The pastor sets the tone for spiritual maturity, and the same goes in disciple making.
  • We are not to just shepherd others but create an environment where others are shepherding others.
  • How you act as a leader is determined by who you are, your character.
  • The pastor must be immersed in the Word of God, yielded to the Holy Spirit, and in relationship with others. The last is often forgotten because we don’t want to be transparent and accountable to others.
  • As a leader you must model or live out what you teach and preach. As the head goes, so does the body. 1 Corinthians 11:1
  • Ephesians 4:11-13 should be a key verse for a disciple maker. Your responsibility is not to simply to be a star on the team but to build up others who will lead and do the work.
  • Do you want to be the star athlete or coach? You must teach and release others to be the boots on the ground for the work.
  • We are trying to make disciples, not just converts.
  • A pastor must be a leader developer. Many of the leaders are already in the church, they are just overlooked or undeveloped.
  • Most pastors are too busy in the church doing the work themselves, so they do not have time to develop other leaders.
  • The difference between a high school coach and a college coach is that a high school coach must develop players he has within his team; a college coach travels to find and recruit/develop players to play on his team. Most pastors play the role of a college coach by recruiting from the outside instead of developing those from the inside.
  • What you celebrate is what your people will aspire to. Many churches celebrate attendance, buildings, offerings, etc., but if you will celebrate how many people are getting connected into discipleship, you will see the fruit from that.
  • A pastor must not only cast the vision for the church, but constantly guard or defend that vision.
  • As a pastor, you cannot disciple everyone yourself so you must teach others to disciple.
  • Even though Jesus spoke to crowds of thousands, that was not the focus of his discipling. His focus was with his disciples, and that is clear all throughout the gospels.
  • We must move discipleship from being an institutional program to a personalized habit.
  • We should teach and expect for disciples to continue the process and disciple others. Jesus taught his disciples to disciple others. A mature disciple is one that disciples others.
  • Every disciple has the capability and responsibility to minister to others.
  • Ask yourself how every ministry in your church connects people to discipleship.
  • You must understand the scorecard in discipleship. The point comes when they are deployed to go out and disciple others – not start a new church, but finish discipleship themselves and begin discipling another.
  • It is more important to evaluate how many people go out instead of how many people show up.
  • A pastor should not just be a teacher but a coach.
  • We must transfer our scorecards from attracting and gathering to discipling and releasing.
  • You should constantly access, correct course, and encourage.
  • The shift must be from gathering a crowd to deploying disciple makers who will disciple others.

Biblical Preaching

By: Haddon W. Robinson

  • We cannot separate ourselves from the Scripture.
  • Preaching is truth poured through personality – Philips Brooks
  • Preaching should develop the preacher into a mature Christian.
  • The Bible is the supreme preacher to the preacher – PT Forsyth
  • Many preachers fail as Christians before they fail as preachers.
  • Preaching comes alive when the disciplined mind and loving heart are going to the Holy Spirit.
  • We must learn to listen to God before we speak for God.
  • As we study the Scriptures, we must understand first of all what God is saying in this portion of Scripture. We then must understand what God wants to change in us because of the Scripture. Lastly we must understand what God wants to use us to teach the listeners through this passage.
  • We must know the people as we learn the Scriptures. Our Lord spoke to the people and their needs in that day. Each letter in the Bible was addressed in a different way because the people were dealing with different things – the Philippians from the Corinthian‘s, etc.
  • Sermons do not fail because they have too many ideas but because they have unrelated ideas.
  • Every Scripture should have a theme.
  • You are not ready to preach until you can condense the message down to one pregnant sentence.
  • We must be careful to not let theological jargon stand in the way of being clear when we preach.
  • If you do not apply the Scriptures to peoples lives, you cannot expect them to do it.
  • Our listeners need both the truth to believe and the ways to apply it.
  • Ask yourself why you are preaching that sermon. A sermon without a purpose is meaningless.
  • A sermon with purpose is what differentiates it from being a mere essay.
  • A sermon is not to be like shooting a firecracker that just makes a noise, it is to be like shooting a gun in which the hunter looks to see his target hit.
  • Write down in a statement what you want the hearers to do as a result of what you preached.
  • People need to be reminded just as much as they need to be informed.
  • Jesus was such a good storyteller that many times one did not even realize when the theological truths were being placed in the story.
  • There are three kinds of preachers: those that you cannot listen to, those that you can listen to, and those that you must listen to. In the introduction, the congregation will decide which one you are.

“Go Ye” Means You

“Go Ye” Means You

By Norman Lewis

  • God could have sent angels to evangelize the world. But He did not. He might have broadcast the message from heaven. But He did not. He might have utilized a heavenly TV. But He did not. God chose to send men, men saved from sin, to win other sinners.
  • Every Christian must fit into God’s plan or miss life‘s meaning.
  • Matthew 28:19–20 uses the word “teach” and “teaching.”  “Teach” deals with evangelization and “teaching” deals with edification.
  • On with the message, on with the light.

On to the regions still shrouded in night,

On to the nations that never have heard,

On with the life-giving, soul-saving Word.

  • It is wonderful to work for God. It is even better to know we are working with God in the task of His choice.
  • Christians should be identified with both the person and purpose of Christ.

Where’s Your Wealth

by Jeffrey Bush 10-2020

May your wealth be in the cross

Not in money, possessions, or fame.

How can you live a normal life?

Instead of being consumed with His lovely name.

He is worthy of absolutely everything,

He deserves your time, your love, and your all.

What is stopping you from selling out?

Do you not hear His beckoning call?

Are you willing to submit?

And lay your life down at His feet?

Or are you holding on too tightly,

Not knowing that your needs He can meet?

Can you say like the apostle Paul,

That you count all your gain as loss?

Do you hunger and thirst for righteousness?

Willing to follow no matter the cost?

Have you grasped that God has a purpose?

That life is not to be about you?

God wants your life for His service,

It’s time to surrender afresh and anew.

Social Media Intelligence (SMI)

Agencies and authorities in our nation, such as FBI, CIA, and DEA, exist to protect people and keep order. When it comes to social media, way too many people get offended, angry, and become bitter. The “SMI” is intended to protect oneself from purposefully or non-purposefully becoming the bully and offender on social media.

  1. Is what I’m going to say God honoring and God representing? If it is against God, God’s Word, or God’s principles, then don’t say it. Can you say what you’re about to say in God’s name?

Colossians 3:17 — And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

1 Corinthians 10:31 — Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

  1. Is what I’m going to say hurtful or helpful to others? Are you speaking out of emotion, aggravation, reaction, frustration, or jealousy? Do you have a hidden agenda? Is it going to edify or destroy others?

1 Corinthians 10:23 — All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

1 Corinthians 8:9 — But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock to them that are weak.

  1. What’s the tone? Since people can’t see your face, be careful how you use your words (all caps, exclamation points, and question marks might appear sarcastic to others reading it). Re-read before you send it out.

  1. Does it really need to be said by you? Maybe a person was wrong (Biblically, ethically, or factually), but do you have to be the person to point it out or can you let someone else? You don’t have to worry about judging or correcting someone, there are lots of people who enjoy being the judge… so let them do it instead.

1 Corinthians 6:7 — Now therefore there is utterly a fault among you, because ye go to law one with another. Why do ye not rather take wrong? why do ye not rather suffer yourselves to be defrauded?

Galatians 5:15 — But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another.

Social media is a useful tool to promote, stay in contact, and follow the activity of friends, but social media also can be the downfall if not careful. Decide you won’t allow the devil to use your social media platform as one of his tools. As Christians, specifically as Christian leaders, we should strive to be above reproach, exemplary, and Christlike in all we do.

Jeffrey Bush

Send a Missionary from Your Congregation in the Next Year

“The mark of a great church is not its seating capacity, but its sending capacity.” — Mike Stachura

According to the book Church Still Works by Paul Chappell and Clayton Reed, there are over 13,000 Independent Baptist churches in the United States. Can you imagine what would happen around the world if every church were to send out just one missionary from their congregation? The impact of the gospel would certainly lighten up this dark world. There is no reason to think the task is too big! It is actually well within the grasp of your church. Did you know that the large majority of missionaries come from churches that run around 50 people in attendance? Our missionaries are not always coming from the megachurches, they’re coming from average or small congregations. Here are a few thoughts to encourage you and your church that it is possible to send a missionary from your congregation… and it can even happen within the next year:

Set your focus.

The focus of the church is expressed by what the pastor preaches, what is emphasized in the Sunday school classes, what is said in the announcements, and what is hung upon the walls of your church. The focus must be getting the gospel to the world. This is crucial to understand if you want to send a missionary from your congregation. Sunday school teachers should be supplied with missions lessons. Missionary biographies should be available in the church. Posters and maps presenting the need should be hung up on the walls. Missionary prayer letters should be read in services and placed on the walls. Missions trips should be planned every year or two. Missionaries should be invited to challenge the church once a month. Missionary illustrations should be used and stats about the need around the world should be heard. Everyone in the church should be involved in praying God would send out someone from your congregation. Make the focus in your church obviously clear that you want to get the gospel to the lost of this world!

Point the youth in the right direction.

You must not simply entertain the youth but realize they are the future of the church in a few short years. If you want to see the future of the church, take a look at your youth program. If you can strategically fire up the youth with a desire to spread the gospel, that fire will spread through the rest of your church. You must be intentional about what is being taught, the activities that are being used, and those allowed to work with the youth. The devil is a fisherman, and he is fishing out our young people way too fast. The allures of fame, fortune, and fun have overtaken the youth, and you must intentionally plead and pray God’s will becomes the focus in their lives.

The Lord is returning.

You do not have to open your eyes very wide to notice the signs pointing towards our Lord’s imminent return. When Christ returns, there will be no more opportunity to send out missionaries, share the gospel, or plead with others to go tell the lost. The buildings will be empty, the accounts will be left, and the darkness around the world will only grow darker.

Christians must live as if we believe He is returning. We cannot take anything to Heaven except for the souls that we lead to Christ and the work that we do for Him now. We must work for the night is coming. Let us pray to our Savior and plead with the saints to go far and wide sharing the gospel before our Lord returns.

Here to Serve,

Jeffrey Bush

Are There Foes?

Exert from W. A. Criswell Sermon Library

Some years ago when I was in Oklahoma, I heard of two Southern Baptist missionaries named Hogan and Hayes. In the midst of an awesome trial, Hogan said to his friend Hayes, “I am quitting; I am going back home. This is too much.”

So Hayes said to his friend and fellow missionary, “I understand, I know; but before you go, would you sit down and sing just one song with me?” Bradford Hayes got his guitar and strummed the tune as they sang:

Am I a soldier of the cross,

A follower of the Lamb?

And shall I fear to own His cause,

Or blush to speak His name?

Must I be carried to the skies

On flow’ry beds of ease,

While others fought to win the prize,

And sailed thro’ bloody seas?

Are there no foes for me to face?

Must I not stem the flood?

Is this vile world a friend to grace,

To help me on to God?

Sure I must fight, if I would reign;

Increase my courage, Lord;

I’ll bear the toil, endure the pain,

Supported by Thy word.

When they got through singing the song, Hogan turned to Hayes and said, “I am staying.”

God never called us to “flow’ry beds of ease.” He called us to be His workers, His servants, and His witnesses. However life may turn in His gracious hands, let us affirm “to God be the glory.” The tears of Paul’s discipleship and apostleship are always evident.
